EDUCATION
Master Class 2015
In its drive to provide the best of educational opportunities DPF2015 is very proud to announce the addition of a Masterclass to the rostrum of workshops and portfolio reviews on offer at the festival. The aim of the Master Class is to offer hands on advanced learning experiences hosted by some of the most talented photographers today.
The Master Class to be held from Oct 27 to Nov 3, 2015 in New Delhi is divided into three parts.
-
Three day intensive workshop designed and led by Olivia Arthur (Magnum Photos) and Philipp Ebeling, photographers and co-founders of Fishbar, a photobook publishers and contemporary gallery based in London.
-
Three half-day interactions with other Masters and photography professionals.
-
Participation in the Opening Week of DPF2015.
NOTE: Though the DPF2015 MasterClass is open to all nationalities, applicants from South Asian countries, including India will be given preference.
COURSE STRUCTURE
PART 1: Workshop with Masters Olivia Arthur & Philipp Ebeling
27 – 29 Oct at British Council, New Delhi
This three-day workshop is aimed at photographers who have a cohesive body of work or on-going projects that they would like to advance and shape. As Arthur and Ebeling state: “We believe that photography can convey complex ideas and tackle difficult subject matter. Working with imagery as writers work with words, photographers can be the authors of their own stories. We would like to help students conceptualise and distil their ideas, talking to an audience as a writer talks to theirs.”
Over the course of the three days both masters will help and guide students to develop their ideas, clarify their message through rigorous editing and contextualise work for a wider audience. The classes will include individual and group edits of students’ photographs as well as group critiques that help identify potential weak points in the work. A key element of the workshop will be a session on the book making process from the point of view of narrative and storytelling. With insights from publishing professionals on what makes for successful photobooks, and with the editing sessions that will take place on the masterclass, students will leave the class with a refined edit of their work and a good understanding of how to embark on making a book when they are ready to do so.
British Council has facilitated the participation of Olivia Arthur and Philipp Ebeling at DPF 2015.
PART 2: Exclusive sessions with other Masters
Nov 1 – 3 at IGNCA, Photoink & British Council, New Delhi

Do-it Yourself Storytelling Workshop with Rob Hornstra & Arnold von Bruggen
Join Rob Hornstra and Arnold Van Bruggen for a two-day intensive workshop at the Delhi Photo Festival.
This workshop is for photographers, designers and storytellers who wish to learn how to construct and present long-term photography projects.
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP
“Many ambitious photographers are conservative when it comes to presenting their projects, offering their work – often free of charge – to newspapers, magazines, or book publishers. They put their fate in the hands of others and wait,” says Hornstra. “That’s unnecessary.”
This workshop is about what we all desire as storytellers and photographers: Freedom. Freedom creates opportunity. Opportunity makes your future.
Over the course of two days, Rob will outline how the Internet and digital printing techniques have opened up endless possibilities for self-published work. The curriculum will also address how to attract an audience to your project, collaboration between photographers and writers, crowd-funding and the process of slow journalism. This workshop’s main objective is to help students in creating independence and become liberated photographers and publishers, ready to begin sharing their stories with the world. Arnold will talk about transmedia, new media and collaborations.
Since 2009, photographer, Rob Hornstra, and writer, Arnold van Bruggen, have collaborated on The Sochi Project, documenting the Russian city of Sochi before it enters the global spotlight as the site of the 2014 Winter Olympics.
In this workshop, Rob will share his insight into the funding and marketing by using The Sochi Project as an example of a self-published photo project.
This workshop is organized by India Photo Project in association with DPF2015, in collaboration with Hauz Khas SOCIAL.

Portfolio Reviews
The Delhi Photo Festival 2015 Portfolio Review is a platform for aspiring and professional photographers, photography students, serious amateurs and photography enthusiasts to present their body of work to be reviewed and critiqued by a panel of leading photography, art, media and publishing experts.
This year’s portfolio review programme will take place over the weekend of the 31st October and 1st November 2015 at the IGNCA in Delhi and is an opportunity for photographers of all genres and levels to receive guidance and mentoring for future artistic and commercial career development as well as a chance to network with influential figures in photography. We have invited a total of over thirty gallerists, curators, book publishers, festival directors, magazine editors, agency directors, educators and renowned national and international photographers to take part in the portfolio reviews.
For our 3rd edition we have devised three different categories of review:
